Understanding Sheep Ages
Sheep are domesticated ruminants with lifespans varying by breed, management, and environment. Most sheep live 8-14 years, with some exceptional animals reaching 16-18 years with excellent care. Sheep reach sexual maturity at 6-12 months depending on breed and nutrition, with ewes typically breeding for the first time at 12-18 months. They are highly social flock animals with complex hierarchies and strong maternal instincts.
Sheep Life Stages
- Lamb (0-12 months): Born after 147-day gestation, nursing and weaning, rapid growth and learning
- Yearling (1-2 years): First breeding season, establishing flock position, developing adult behaviors
- Young Adult (2-4 years): Prime reproductive years, peak physical condition, establishing dominance
- Mature Adult (4-8 years): Experienced breeding, optimal productivity, stable social status
- Senior (8+ years): Declining reproduction, accumulated wisdom, possible health issues

Sheep Biology and Behavior
Sheep are intelligent, social animals with excellent memory and strong flocking instincts. They are primarily grazers, preferring grass and forbs to browse. Sheep have excellent vision with nearly 360-degree field of view and can recognize up to 50 different faces for years. They communicate through vocalizations, body language, and scent marking.
Key Sheep Characteristics:
- Seasonal breeding with most breeds cycling in fall (September-December)
- Gestation period of approximately 147 days (5 months)
- Strong flocking instincts and hierarchical social structure
- Excellent memory for faces, places, and experiences lasting years
- Four-chambered stomach allowing efficient digestion of grass and forages
- Natural wool growth in most breeds requiring annual shearing
