Understanding the Child Tax Credit
The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a tax benefit that helps families offset the costs of raising children. The credit is worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17, with up to $1,600 being refundable as the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).
Eligibility Requirements
- Child must be under age 17 at the end of the tax year
- Child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or descendant
- Child must have lived with you for more than half the year
- Child must not have provided more than half of their own support
- Child must be a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien
- Child must have a valid Social Security Number
Income Phase-out Thresholds (2024)
- Single: $200,000
- Married Filing Jointly: $400,000
- Married Filing Separately: $200,000
- Head of Household: $200,000
The credit is reduced by $50 for each $1,000 (or fraction thereof) of AGI above the threshold.
