Understanding the Child Tax Credit

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a tax benefit that helps families offset the costs of raising children. The credit is worth up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17, with up to $1,600 being refundable as the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Child must be under age 17 at the end of the tax year
  • Child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, sibling, or descendant
  • Child must have lived with you for more than half the year
  • Child must not have provided more than half of their own support
  • Child must be a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien
  • Child must have a valid Social Security Number

Income Phase-out Thresholds (2024)

  • Single: $200,000
  • Married Filing Jointly: $400,000
  • Married Filing Separately: $200,000
  • Head of Household: $200,000

The credit is reduced by $50 for each $1,000 (or fraction thereof) of AGI above the threshold.
