Understanding GPA Calculation
A Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized way of measuring academic achievement. It converts letter grades or percentages to a numerical scale, allowing for easy comparison of academic performance across courses and institutions.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
- Weighted GPA: Accounts for credit hours. Courses with more credits have a greater impact on your overall GPA.
- Unweighted GPA: Treats all courses equally regardless of credit hours. Each course contributes the same weight.
Standard 4.0 GPA Scale
| Letter Grade | Percentage | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97-100% | 4.0 |
| A | 93-96% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90-92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87-89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83-86% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80-82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77-79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73-76% | 2.0 |
| C- | 70-72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67-69% | 1.3 |
| D | 63-66% | 1.0 |
| D- | 60-62% | 0.7 |
| F | 0-59% | 0.0 |
How GPA is Calculated
The weighted GPA formula is: GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours, where Quality Points = Grade Points x Credit Hours for each course. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course yields 12.0 quality points.
Tips for Improving Your GPA
- Focus on courses with more credit hours, as they impact your GPA more
- Use academic resources like tutoring and office hours
- Plan your course load each semester to balance difficulty
- Retake courses with low grades if your institution allows grade replacement
