Small Calorie vs. Kilocalorie (Food Calorie)

The word "calorie" is used for two different units, which often causes confusion. The small calorie (cal) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. The large calorie, or kilocalorie (kcal), is 1,000 small calories and is the unit shown on food and nutrition labels — often written with a capital C as "Calorie."

• Small calorie (cal): 1 cal = 4.184 J (thermochemical).
• Food Calorie / kilocalorie (kcal or Cal): 1 kcal = 1,000 cal = 4,184 J.

This converter works with the small calorie. If you are converting a food Calorie value, multiply by 1,000 first (for example, a 250 Calorie snack equals 250,000 cal = 1,046,000 J).

The Conversion Factor

The joule (J) is the SI unit of energy, equal to the work done when a force of one newton acts through one metre. To convert between calories and joules, use the thermochemical calorie definition:

• Calories to Joules: J = cal × 4.184
• Joules to Calories: cal = J ÷ 4.184

Note that the "15°C calorie" and the "international steam table calorie" (1 cal = 4.1868 J) differ slightly. The thermochemical calorie of 4.184 J is the most widely used definition in chemistry and physics.

Common Uses

• Chemistry & thermochemistry: reaction enthalpies and heats of formation are often tabulated in calories or kilocalories.
• Nutrition: food energy is reported in kilocalories (food Calories) but laboratory measurements use joules.
• Physics & engineering: converting legacy calorie data into the SI joule for calculations and reports.
• Education: demonstrating energy unit relationships in coursework and lab work.
