How Cycling Speed Is Calculated
Cycling speed describes how much distance you cover per unit of time. The three quantities — speed, distance, and time — are linked by a single relationship, so if you know any two of them you can solve for the third.
Formulas
- Speed = Distance / Time
- Distance = Speed × Time
- Time = Distance / Speed
Average Cycling Speeds by Rider Level
- Beginner - 15-20 km/h (9-12 mph)
- Recreational - 20-25 km/h (12-16 mph)
- Intermediate - 25-30 km/h (16-19 mph)
- Advanced - 30-35 km/h (19-22 mph)
- Professional - 35+ km/h (22+ mph)
Unit Notes
When the distance unit is kilometers, speed is shown in kilometers per hour (km/h). When the distance unit is miles, speed is shown in miles per hour (mph). Time is entered as hours plus minutes and converted to decimal hours for the calculation; solved time is shown in HH:MM format.
