Drywall Calculator

Calculate the number of drywall sheets, joint compound, and tape for your room

Understanding Drywall Estimates

Drywall (also called gypsum board, plasterboard, or wallboard) is sold in standard sheets. Estimating the number of sheets, along with the joint compound and tape needed to finish the seams, helps you budget your project and avoid extra trips to the store.

How the Estimate Works:

  • Wall Area: 2 x (Length + Width) x Height
  • Ceiling Area (optional): Length x Width
  • Sheets: Total Area / Sheet Area, rounded up
  • Joint Compound: about 0.05 lb per ft²
  • Tape: about 0.5 ft per ft²

These figures are estimates. Real projects include waste from cuts around windows, doors, and outlets, so many builders add 10 to 15 percent extra to the sheet count.

Standard Drywall Sheet Sizes

Sheet Size Area Best For
4 x 8 ft 32 ft² Most common, easy to handle
4 x 12 ft 48 ft² Fewer seams on large walls

Tip: Larger 4 x 12 sheets reduce the number of joints to tape and finish, but they are heavier and harder to maneuver in tight spaces.

Note: This calculator provides estimates based on standard formulas and does not subtract openings such as windows and doors. Always add a waste allowance and confirm quantities with your supplier before purchasing.
