How Fence Material Estimates Work
Planning a fence starts with knowing how much material you need. This calculator breaks your fence down into sections (the spans between posts), then estimates the posts, rails, and pickets required. Accurate estimates help you avoid extra trips to the store and reduce wasted material.
Estimating Formulas:
- Sections: Fence Length / Post Spacing (rounded up)
- Posts: Sections + 1
- Rails: Sections x Rails per Section
- Pickets: (Fence Length x 12) / (Picket Width + Picket Gap)
Common Defaults:
- Post spacing is typically 6 to 8 feet for wood fences
- Rails per section is usually 2 for fences up to 6 feet, 3 for taller fences
- Picket width for a standard dog-ear picket is 5.5 inches
- Picket gap is 0 for privacy fences and up to several inches for spaced fences
Tips for Planning Your Fence
1. Buy Extra Pickets
Order about 10% more pickets than calculated to account for warped boards, miscuts, and future repairs. Pickets vary in quality, so having spares saves time.
2. Account for Gates
Gates interrupt the run of pickets and require extra posts for hinges and latches. Subtract gate openings from your fence length or plan for additional posts at each gate.
3. Check Local Codes
Many areas have rules on fence height, setback from property lines, and post depth. Verify requirements and locate property lines before digging.
