Bill Split Calculator

Split a bill evenly or by share among friends, including tip and tax.

How the Bill Split Is Calculated

This calculator divides a restaurant or group bill evenly among everyone at the table, including the tip and any tax. The math is straightforward:

  • Tip amount = bill subtotal × tip percentage ÷ 100
  • Grand total = bill subtotal + tax + tip amount
  • Per person = grand total ÷ number of people

For example, a $100 bill with a 15% tip and $8 in tax produces a $15 tip, a $123 grand total, and $30.75 per person when split four ways.

Tips for Splitting a Bill Fairly

Even Split

Add the tip and tax to the subtotal and divide by the number of people. This is the simplest and fairest method when everyone ordered roughly the same.

Account for Tax and Tip

Always include the tax and tip in the total before dividing. Splitting only the subtotal can leave the group short when the bill arrives.

Round for Convenience

For cash payments, consider rounding each share up to the nearest whole unit. The small surplus can cover any rounding gaps or boost the tip.
