Tipping Etiquette & Customs by Region
Tipping norms vary widely around the world. What is considered generous in one country can be unnecessary, or even rude, in another. Here is a general guide to restaurant tipping customs:
- United States & Canada: Tipping is expected. 15-20% is standard for good service, with 20%+ for excellent service.
- United Kingdom & Ireland: 10-15% is common; check whether a service charge is already included.
- Continental Europe: Service is often included. Rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% is appreciated.
- Japan & South Korea: Tipping is not customary and can cause confusion. Excellent service is the standard.
- Australia & New Zealand: Tipping is not expected; staff are paid a living wage. Tips are a bonus for great service.
How to Split a Bill
Splitting a restaurant bill fairly is easy with a few simple approaches:
Even Split
The simplest method: add the tip to the bill and divide the total by the number of people. This works best when everyone ordered roughly the same.
Itemized Split
Each person pays for what they ordered, then adds a proportional share of the tip. Fairer when orders vary significantly in price.
Round-Up Convenience
Enable the round-up option to bump the total to the nearest whole unit. This makes cash payments easier and slightly increases the tip.
Tipping on Pre-Tax vs Post-Tax Amounts
A common question is whether to calculate the tip on the bill before or after sales tax. Etiquette experts generally agree that tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is perfectly acceptable, since the tax is a government charge and not part of the service provided.
In practice, many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity, which results in a slightly higher tip. Either approach is reasonable. If you want to tip strictly on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal (before tax) as the bill amount in this calculator.
