Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate the fuel cost of a trip from distance, fuel economy, and fuel price.

How to Improve Fuel Economy

Small changes in how you drive and maintain your vehicle can meaningfully reduce how much fuel you burn on every trip:

  • Drive smoothly: Hard acceleration and braking can lower fuel economy by 15-30% at highway speeds.
  • Keep tires inflated: Properly inflated tires can improve mileage by up to 3%.
  • Reduce excess weight: Every extra 100 lbs (45 kg) can cut economy by about 1%.
  • Limit idling and air conditioning: Idling burns fuel while going nowhere.
  • Maintain your engine: Clean air filters and timely tune-ups keep efficiency high.

MPG vs L/100km vs km/L

Different regions measure fuel efficiency differently. Understanding the three common systems helps you compare vehicles accurately:

  • MPG (miles per gallon): Common in the US. Higher is better.
  • L/100km (liters per 100 km): Common in Europe. Lower is better.
  • km/L (kilometers per liter): Used in parts of Asia and South America. Higher is better.

Note that US gallons and Imperial (UK) gallons differ, so MPG figures are not directly interchangeable between countries.

Estimating Trip Costs

To estimate the fuel cost of a journey you only need three numbers: the distance you will travel, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current price of fuel. The calculator multiplies the fuel needed by the price per unit to give your total cost.

For a more complete picture of the cost of driving, remember that fuel is only part of the equation. Tolls, parking, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation all add to the real cost per mile or kilometer. Splitting the fuel cost with passengers is a simple way to make trips more affordable for everyone.

Note: This calculator provides an estimate based on the values you enter. Real-world fuel consumption varies with driving conditions, traffic, terrain, weather, vehicle load, and driving style. This tool is for informational purposes only.
