Road Trip Time Calculator

Estimate total driving time from distance, average speed, and rest or fuel stops.

How the Road Trip Time Calculator Works

Estimating travel time is simple once you know your distance and the average speed you expect to maintain. The calculator divides the distance by your average speed to find the driving time, then adds any rest or fuel stops to give you the total trip time.

  • Driving time = distance ÷ average speed
  • Total time = driving time + total stop time
  • Results are shown in hours and minutes (for example, 5h 30m).

Choosing a Realistic Average Speed

Your average speed is rarely the same as the speed limit. Traffic, road type, weather, and the number of times you slow down all reduce it. Here are some rough guidelines:

Highway Driving

On open highways you might average 60-70 mph (95-110 kph), though this drops near cities and during peak hours.

Mixed Roads

Trips with a mix of highway and rural roads often average 45-55 mph (70-90 kph) once stops and junctions are factored in.

City Driving

In-town driving with traffic lights and congestion can average just 20-30 mph (30-50 kph). Plan accordingly for urban legs.

Planning Rest and Fuel Stops

Safety experts recommend taking a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours of driving to stay alert. Add up the time for all your planned breaks, fuel stops, and meals, and enter the total in the stop time field.

For a long day on the road, an hour or more of cumulative stops is common. Building this into your estimate gives you a far more realistic arrival time than driving time alone.

Note: This calculator is for informational purposes only. Actual travel time depends on traffic, weather, road conditions, and unplanned delays. Use the results as an estimate and allow extra time for your journey.
