How the Time Duration Calculator Works
This tool measures the elapsed time between two clock times. Enter a start time and an end time, and it returns the duration in hours and minutes, the total number of minutes, and the equivalent number of decimal hours.
Each time is converted into minutes since midnight. The start is subtracted from the end to find the total minutes, which is then split into whole hours and the remaining minutes.
Handling Overnight Time Spans
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the span crosses midnight and adds 24 hours to the end time. For example, a shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is treated as 8 hours.
You can also tick the "next day" checkbox to force an overnight calculation even when the times would otherwise fall on the same day.
Decimal Hours Explained
Decimal hours express a duration as a single number, with minutes shown as a fraction of an hour. For instance, 8 hours and 30 minutes equals 8.50 decimal hours, because 30 minutes is half (0.50) of an hour. Decimal hours are useful for payroll, time tracking, and billing.
Note: This calculator is for informational purposes only. It measures the difference between two clock times and does not account for time zone changes or daylight saving transitions.
