US Butter Stick Sizes
In the United States, butter is most often sold in sticks. A standard stick is a convenient kitchen unit because its wrapper is printed with tablespoon and cup markings, making it easy to slice off the amount a recipe calls for.
- 1 stick = 8 tablespoons = 1/2 cup = 4 ounces ≈ 113.4 grams
- 1/2 stick = 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup = 2 ounces ≈ 56.7 grams
- 4 sticks = 1 pound = 2 cups ≈ 453.6 grams (a standard US box of butter)
Gram Equivalents
This converter works by translating your input into grams and then into every other unit. The reference values used (for US butter) are:
- 1 stick = 113.398 g
- 1 tablespoon = 14.1748 g
- 1 cup = 226.796 g
- 1 ounce = 28.3495 g
- 1 gram = 1 g
US vs European Butter Packaging
Butter packaging differs around the world, which is a common source of confusion when following recipes from another country.
- United States: Sold in 4-ounce (113 g) sticks, four to a 1-pound (454 g) box. East-coast sticks are long and thin; west-coast (Elgin) sticks are short and stubby, but both weigh the same.
- Europe: Sold in solid blocks, most commonly 250 g (about 2.2 US sticks) or 200 g. There is no "stick" concept, so European recipes almost always specify grams.
- Tip: When a US recipe calls for sticks and you only have a metric block, convert to grams and weigh the amount with a kitchen scale for the most accurate result.
Note: These conversions are based on standard US butter, where 1 stick weighs 113.4 g. Volume-to-weight equivalents assume butter at typical refrigerated density. Slight variations between brands and temperatures are normal and will not meaningfully affect most recipes.
