Cake Serving Calculator

Estimate how many servings a round or sheet cake yields based on its size.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator first works out the surface area of the top of your cake, then divides it by the area each slice takes up for your chosen serving style. The result is the number of whole slices you can cut.

  • Round: area = π × (diameter / 2)²
  • Square: area = side × side
  • Rectangular: area = length × width

Party vs. Event Servings

The number of servings depends heavily on how big each slice is. Two common standards are used:

  • Party serving: a generous 2 x 2 inch slice (about 4 square inches), suited to casual gatherings and birthdays.
  • Wedding / event serving: a slim 1 x 2 inch slice (about 2 square inches), the traditional size for formal events where cake is served alongside other desserts.

Note: These figures are estimates based on standard slice sizes and the top surface area of a single cake layer. Actual yield varies with cake height, how the cake is cut, and how generous the slices are. Always prepare a little extra for larger gatherings.
