Drinks for Party Calculator

Estimate how many drinks to buy for a party from guests, hours, and type.

The four percentages should add up to 100%.

How Many Drinks Do You Need?

Planning drinks for a party comes down to a few simple rules of thumb that experienced hosts and caterers rely on. The biggest factors are how many guests you expect and how long the event will run. From there, you decide the balance between beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options, and convert the number of drinks into actual bottles and cans to buy.

The First-Hour / Later-Hours Rule

A widely used guideline is that guests drink a little faster early on and then settle into a slower pace. This calculator assumes roughly one drink per guest during the first hour and about half a drink per guest for every hour after that:

Total Drinks = Guests × (1 + 0.5 × (Hours − 1))

For example, 20 guests at a 4-hour party need about 20 × (1 + 0.5 × 3) = 20 × 2.5 = 50 drinks. It is always smart to round up and keep a little extra on hand.

Turning Drinks Into a Shopping List

Once you know how many drinks of each type you need, convert them into purchase units using these common serving estimates:

Beer

1 drink = 1 bottle / can

Each beer is a single serving, so the number of beer drinks equals the number of bottles or cans to buy.

Wine

1 bottle ≈ 5 glasses

A standard 750 ml bottle pours about five glasses, so divide your wine glasses by five to get the number of bottles.

Spirits

1 bottle ≈ 16 drinks

A 750 ml bottle of spirits makes roughly sixteen cocktails, so divide cocktail drinks by sixteen for bottles of liquor.

Responsible Hosting

These numbers are planning estimates only. Actual consumption varies with your guests, the occasion, the weather, and whether food is served. Plan thoughtfully and prioritize everyone's safety:

  • Always offer non-alcoholic options – water, soft drinks, and mocktails keep everyone hydrated and included.
  • Serve food – eating slows alcohol absorption and keeps the party comfortable.
  • Never let guests drive impaired – arrange rides, taxis, or designated drivers, and be ready to host overnight stays.
  • Know your local laws – serving alcohol to minors or visibly intoxicated guests can carry legal liability.

Note: This calculator provides planning estimates only and does not encourage excessive drinking. Please drink responsibly, never drink and drive, and ensure all guests have a safe way home. Serve alcohol only to adults of legal drinking age.
