True Shooting Percentage Calculator

Calculate basketball true shooting percentage (TS%) from points, field goals, and free throws.

What True Shooting Percentage Measures

True shooting percentage (TS%) is an advanced basketball efficiency metric that measures how well a player scores while accounting for the added value of three-pointers and free throws. Unlike traditional field goal percentage, TS% rewards players who score from beyond the arc or get to the free throw line, giving a more complete picture of scoring efficiency.

The Formula

  • TS% = PTS / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)) × 100
  • True Shot Attempts (TSA) = FGA + 0.44 × FTA
  • The 0.44 factor estimates the number of possessions used on free throw attempts, since not every trip to the line uses a full possession (and-ones, technical fouls, and three-shot fouls all affect the average).

Typical TS% Ranges

  • 60%+ - Elite efficiency (MVP-caliber scoring)
  • 56%-60% - Excellent
  • 53%-56% - Above average (league average ~57%)
  • 50%-53% - Average
  • Below 50% - Below average / inefficient
