ERA Calculator

Calculate a pitcher’s earned run average (ERA) from earned runs and innings pitched.

About Earned Run Average (ERA)

Earned Run Average (ERA) is the most common statistic used to evaluate a baseball pitcher. It measures the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings pitched. An earned run is any run that scores without the help of a fielding error or passed ball, so ERA reflects how well a pitcher prevents runs based on their own performance.

The Formula

  • ERA = (Earned Runs × 9) / Innings Pitched
  • The multiplier of 9 scales the result to a full nine-inning game, so ERA represents earned runs allowed over a complete game.

What Counts as a Good ERA?

  • Below 2.00 - Outstanding (elite, ace level)
  • 2.00-3.00 - Excellent
  • 3.00-4.00 - Above Average
  • 4.00-5.00 - Average
  • Above 5.00 - Below Average
