Earned Run Average (ERA)
About Earned Run Average (ERA)
Earned Run Average (ERA) is the most common statistic used to evaluate a baseball pitcher. It measures the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings pitched. An earned run is any run that scores without the help of a fielding error or passed ball, so ERA reflects how well a pitcher prevents runs based on their own performance.
The Formula
- ERA = (Earned Runs × 9) / Innings Pitched
- The multiplier of 9 scales the result to a full nine-inning game, so ERA represents earned runs allowed over a complete game.
What Counts as a Good ERA?
- Below 2.00 - Outstanding (elite, ace level)
- 2.00-3.00 - Excellent
- 3.00-4.00 - Above Average
- 4.00-5.00 - Average
- Above 5.00 - Below Average
